Welcome to Lerwick Old Town

The Perfect Base For Your Shetland Adventure

About Alder Lodge

Alder Lodge Guest House has been a well renowned friendly, family-run establishment since 1984 offering modern amenities, whilst maintaining its historical roots.

Steeped in rich history, it was built between 1830-1840 and originally constructed as the Union Bank, which was Shetland’s first bank… with rumours of an (as yet!) undiscovered vault beneath the old kitchen.

The heritage is reflected in the property’s solid stone architecture.

Due to its central location in Lerwick, the garden played a pivotal role during the island’s world famous Up Helly Aa festival, serving as the collection point for the lighting of the torches prior to the procession.

About Lerwick

Lerwick is the northernmost town in the United Kingdom.

It’s a vibrant hub of rich Viking heritage, stunning natural beauty and unique Scottish culture.

Strolling through the narrow lanes of Lerwick you will discover its picturesque harbour, often bustling with fishing boats, ferries and the occasional seal!

The towns charm lies in its well-preserved historical architecture, such as the Fort Charlotte, a 17th century fort with panoramic views over the town and further afield.

The Shetland Museum offers an insight into the islands’ rich history, showcasing exhibits from the prehistoric era to modern day, with a cinema, café and restaurant all located within sight.

Nature enthusiasts will revel in Lerwick’s close proximity to wild landscapes.  Clickimin Broch, an ancient iron age stone walled fort and its surrounding loch offers a serene spot for exploration.  Meanwhile, coastal walks reveal dramatic cliffs teeming with seabirds, seals basking on rocky shores and pristine beaches, and even the occasional glimpse of orcas in surrounding waters.

Delve into Lerwick’s festivities and see the town come to life during the spectacular celebration that is the annual Up Helly Aa festival or immerse yourself in traditional music during the annual Folk Festival.

Visitors can sample the local delicacies, including world famous Shetland lamb and seafood in the quaint cafes and restaurants you’ll discover meandering the town centre.

For television buffs, no visit will be complete without a visit to the Lodberries, where you’ll find none other than Jimmy Perez’s famous dwelling from the award-winning BBC drama Shetland.

Whether you are a historian enthusiast, nature lover, or just seeking a peaceful escape, Lerwick offers you a unique blend of culture, history and natural wonders that promise a memorable experience.

Getting Here

Alder Lodge is on the main bus route from the airport. If you ask the driver they will sometimes stop outside the door, if not the bus stop is just a couple of minutes walk.
